Many Facebook users are teenagers and the platform wants to help them in multiple ways. It rolled out a new app called LIFESTAGE , which is dedicated to teens only and it has an age restriction feature as well
You can only use the app if you are under 21 (yrs old). Lifestyle functions like a video diary where users can interact and associate with each other through pictures and videos. The app was designed by Michael Sayman, a product manager at Facebook.
The 19-year old manager (Michael Salman) always thought that things should change with Facebook, which is why it’s different now from what it was in 2004. He came up with the idea to make a complete profile video based on interesting things about the user.
The app, which will be launched today, will have all your bio-data in video format. Unlike other social networks where you have to enter text in order to answer 5ome questions about yourself , Lifestage will let you record a small video clip about yourself. Other users will be able to see this video when they visit the profile. The app also asks for your likes, dislikes, mood and other interesting things.
The app has been specifically developed for high-school students. Those above the age of 21 can still download the app but won’t be able to communicate with anyone. Users of the app can block and report other users based on harassment, abuse and discrimination. All students would need an edu email (google check that to find out what it means) address to register with the social network in order to use the app.
You don’t need to have a Facebook account in order to sign-up with Lifestage. Once you are done with the registration and have selected your high school, you could see profiles of people from your school. But schools will only be visible once 20 users or more are active, thus teenagers need to bring their friends on Lifestage if they want to make it interesting.
Once you are connected with your friends, you can then browse through their profiles and view their photos and videos. It will also have a News Feed of the latest updates shared by school friends. Lifestage is currently available on the App Store only.
At the F8 Conference, Mark Zuckerberg said that he “wants video at the heart of all our apps and services”. Now, he has a standalone app for video only but we’ll have to wait and see if it’s a hit or not. In the past, Facebook’s luck with standalone apps has not worked out as the company had hoped. These apps included Poke, Riff and slingshot. We should hope that this app may turn things around for Facebook as it seems to have enough potential to bring high school students on a single exclusive platform.
